Contraception with IUD

  05. April 2020

Many women wish a natural contraception with low or no hormones and without side effects. The IUD is a good alternative to the contraceptive pill for women who do not want to take an increased risk of thrombosis, who experience side-effects or who are not allowed to take birth control pills.

Who is the spiral suitable for?

In contrast to the pill, both copper IUD, gold IUD or the hormone IUDs do not increase the risk of thrombosis and are therefore particularly suitable for women who should not take the pill. These are women who smoke, are overweight, have high blood pressure, are over 35 years old, have already had thrombosis or have a risk in the family, who suffer from migraines and women who are breastfeeding.

What influence does an IUD have on my period?

We recommend women which are suffering from strong and painful menstruation the insertion of hormone IUD (Mirena, Kyleena or Jaydess) as this reduces bleeding strength and mentrual pain. While in the conventional copper IUD in some women an increase in the monthly bleeding occurs, this is not to be expected in the gold IUD. In all IUDs, the cycle is usually not affected, i.e. regular ovulation is expected and fertility is restored immediately after removal. In the hormonal IUDs, irregular bleeding usually occurs in the first weeks after the insertion, but these usually decrease and after 3-6 months a satisfactory bleeding behavior has set in in the majority of women or the period stops completely.

How is the IUD inserted?

The IUD is inserted into the uterus by the gynecologist during menstruation and works there between 3 and 5 years, depending on the model. The insertion is painless, uncomplicated for most women and is performed by us with a special method, with half-full bladder and under ultrasound control, very gentle and controlled. Since in rare cases, the IUD may be ejected in the first weeks after the insertion, we check the correct position after 6 weeks by ultrasound.

Do I have to bear the costs of the IUD myself?

The cost for an IUD you have to carry yourself. Only in the case of a special indication, the health insurance company assumes the costs

How safe is the IUD?

The IUD is also suitable for young women who have not yet given birth and is very safe from the contraceptive effect (low pearl index*).
